Mike received his undergraduate degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1985 and his law degree from the University of Richmond in 1989. He was admitted to the Virginia bar that same year.
Throughout Mike’s career as an attorney he has engaged in a full and diverse criminal defense and civil litigation practice. The traffic cases he handles range from speeding, reckless driving, and driving under the influence cases. He also represents clients charged with serious misdemeanor and felony matters such as murder, drug distribution, manslaughter, assault, probation violations, and sex offenses. Mike also represents individuals seeking to have their civil rights restored as well as the restoration of driving privileges and the right to possess firearms after having been convicted of a felony.
As counsel in civil matters Mike represents either plaintiffs or defendants in cases involving divorce, spousal and child support, and child custody and visitation. Mike is also qualified to serve as a guardian ad litem to represent children in custody, visitation, and abuse and neglect matters. He has also represented the counties of Goochland and Louisa Departments of Social Services when the Departments’ attorney were presented with conflicts.
For 15 years the Circuit Court of Goochland County annually appointed Mike as counsel for the indigent inmates at the Virginia Correctional Center for Women. The same appointment was made to the Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women for 13 years by the Fluvanna County Circuit Court. The matters he addressed as inmate counsel included reviewing allegations for writs of habeas corpus, appellate issues, conditions of confinement, and medical care.
Mike’s law-enforcement experience includes serving as a police officer for the Henrico County Division of Police and as a trooper with the Virginia Department of State Police. He has also been an assistant Commonwealth’s attorney for Orange County, Virginia and a two-term elected Commonwealth’s attorney for Goochland County, Virginia
Mike’s background as a law-enforcement officer, his experience in the practice of criminal and civil law, and his experience in the investigation and prosecution of criminal offenses brings a unique perspective in resolving issues facing clients.
